No-deal Brexit could collapse UK's meat market
A no-deal Brexit could cause a hole in the UK's meat industry, as two large associations claim at this point. The British meat market could collapse similar to the foot-and-mouth outbreak if there is a post-Brexit ban on exports to Europe, the National Farmers Union (NFU) has said, according to The Times.
Minette Batters, NFU president, is worried about the fact that while European imports will be allowed in the Kingdom without tariffs, to address fears of shortages, British meat exports will be banned in the single market until a trade deal is reached between the two parts. In her opinion, such a scenario would be "catastrophic" for British farmers, in terms of oversupply.
Her point of view is shared by the National Pig Association representatives who are considering a situation like this as "a hole in the economics" of the sector.
