New trends in the US market. Meat consumption is expected to rise

That is the number found on a projection made by US Department of Agriculture for this year and it also stands for a record in meat consumption in t hast 14 years, according to Yakima Herald.

Industry experts believe that price will be the main factor leading to this increase after a period in which the industry was challenged by the drought and high feed costs.

“This uptick is going to be due mostly to expanding supply, It’s very good news for us”, said Patti Brumbach, executive director of the Washington Beef Commission.

More meat available makes people eat more, believe Jay Theiler, director of marketing for Boise, Idaho-based Agri Beef. “We went through several years of really tight supply. With the rebuilding of the herd, you’re going to see more availability”, confirms Theiler.

Chicken will be the star of meat consumption for this year but beef and pork will drive the growth, steak regaining terrain as an American icon.

Chicken consumption is projected to increase 41.6 kg/year, while beef is expected to leap from 25.8 kg to 26.8 and pork from 22.6 to23.6 kg/year.
