Namibia sent its first shipment of beef to China

Namibia became the first African country to sign a beef export agreement with China in 2015 but the first shipment was sent this week. "We will not continue to send unprocessed meat, instead we will have value addition", declared Trade and industrialisation minister Tjekero Tweya, according to Namibian.com website.
The minister underlined the fact that producers must take value addition seriously before exporting as the African continental free trade area will be opened soon for trade between African countries which have a combined population of about 1,3 billion.
At this time, Namibia is still the only African country to export beef in China, as South African exports have been banned due to an FMD outbreak.
This week, veterinary health certificates have been issued for South African beef exports to resume to countries including Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, announced the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Exports to China of red meat, pork and wool products continue to be suspended but the South African agriculture ministry said it was in talks with China to resume trade.
