More than 200 million eggs recalled due to salmonella fears

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that producer Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana, will recall almost 207 million eggs from nine US states due to fears over contamination with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Federal officials said that 22 illnesses have been reported to date. The authorities have linked the illnesses to the Rose Acre Farms' unit in North Carolina which produces 2.3 million eggs a day from 3 million hens.

This is the biggest recall since 2010 when a salmonella outbreak sickened more than 1,500 people.

The eggs were distributed from the farm in Hyde County, North Carolina and reached consumers in the following states: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery.
