Mongolia bans livestock exports
The Mongolian government has placed a ban on livestock exports and wants to encourage the local processors to expand their businesses. "Previous governments' decisions on exporting live livestock animals have been overturned. Instead of it, Prime Minister Ukhnaa Khurelsukh has ordered relevant officials to pay special attention to increasing the capacity of existing meat processing plants and building new ones in order to raise meat exports," informs the government press office.
The country reported a number of 66.46 million animals at the end of 2018. On the other hand, meat export value for last year stood at $190 million, according to the Mongolian Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Chultem Ulaan. Most of that meat was shipped to China.
In January, Mongolia was hit by the ASF virus but that is not considered to be a serious problem as long as the national pig inventory is about 30,000 head.
