Mexico reports case of avian influenza AH5N1 in wild birds
The National Service for Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) confirmed in its laboratories the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza AH5N1, a strain of the virus that has caused serious outbreaks in Europe, the United States and Canada. The isolation was carried out in a falcon that fed on wild game birds in the Lerma river basin, State of Mexico.
The agency of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that as a result of the work carried out through the National Animal Health Emergency Device (Dinesa), launched in June 2022 to protect national poultry production, received the report and the pertinent tests were immediately carried out in order to confirm the cause of the falcon's death.
Technicians from the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Other Exotic Animal Diseases, of the General Directorate of Animal Health (DGSA) of Senasica, are currently taking more samples in the region, in order to confirm the presence or absence of the virus in other wild birds.
The DGSA emphasized that at this time there are no more suspected cases, however, it urges commercial and backyard poultry production units to increase biosecurity measures on their farms, to comply with all the provisions of Dinesa already immediately report any anomaly they observe in their animals.
Dinesa is a mechanism that activates all the resources of the Government of Mexico to control and eradicate an exotic animal pest or disease.
The Agreement to activate the Dinesa, published in the Official Gazette of the Federatio on June 3, indicates that the coordination of the device is in charge of the Senasica, through the DGSA, with the participation of the State Groups of Animal Health Emergency (GEESA), state governments and the productive sector.
The owners, intermediaries, marketers and all those persons who carry out activities related to the production, industrialization, transport and commercialization of birds, their products, by-products and all those materials and instruments related to poultry farming are obliged to comply with the agreement.
In order to protect national poultry production, the agreement establishes control mechanisms for the movement of birds and other measures that must be taken to prevent the spread of the disease throughout the national territory.
