Mexico increases livestock exports to the US

Mexican herders from 14 states have exported a larger number of cattle between September 2019 and the end of August this year to the US market, informs a document released by the National Service of Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (Senasica). In total, 1,392,836 cattle were sent across the border in that period, 55,209 cattle more than in the commercialization period of 2019. Also, during the first eight weeks of the 2020-2021 cycle, Mexico has exported 193,704 head of live cattle (+40%). According to the report on the export of live bovine cattle, calf exports in this cycle have been higher in each of the weeks reported, even with the health contingency due to covid-19. Of the total animals exported through week eight, 145,158 (75%) are standing calves and 48,546 are heifers (25%). "The recognition of tuberculosis that allows Mexican producers to export their livestock is possible thanks to the effort that technicians and producers make to carry out the work of the National Campaign Against Bovine Tuberculosis, through which it has been achieved that 86.12% of the national territory is in the eradication phase of the disease, with a prevalence of less than 0.5%," commented Senasica officials.
