Meat producers from Wales are searching for new markets in the Middle East

The uncertainty raised by no-deal Brexit scenario is forcing meat producers from Wales to look for new markets in the Middle East, as the EU market may be lost for the Welsh red meat industry due to tariffs imposed after March 29.
This year, HCC has expanded its presence at Gulfood 2019 in order to gain visibility for possible new clients in the emerging markets. While PGI Welsh Lamb has been exported to the United Arab Emirates for some years and has become established as a leading premium brand, the Gulfood show is also attended by food importers from across the wider Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. This region includes many countries where restrictions on exporting UK lamb and beef have recently been eased, such as India and Saudi Arabia, informs HCC. "Gulfood is a very important fair, with buyers from all over the region looking for quality produce. Thanks to hard work over recent years, we’ve seen progress in opening markets that had been closed to UK red meat, so this year is especially important as we work to make connections between Welsh companies and importers from Saudi Arabia and India. It takes time to grow new markets, but it’s helpful that Welsh Lamb is already established in hotels and supermarkets in Dubai", commented HCC’s Market Development Manager Rhys Llywelyn.
