Meat consumption in Russia continues to grow

The consumption of meat in Russia increased by 4% in the first nine months of 2017 compared to the corresponding period from last year, when it grew by only 1.3%, the general director of the National Union of Swine Breeders from Russia (NSS), Yury Kovalev, said during an event in Moscow, according to agroinvest.ru.

Meat consumption in Russia continues to grow

Until the end of the year consumption of meat per capita will be 75 kg, an icrease of 3% year-over-year.

The demand for pork in Russia, in the first nine months of 2017, increased by 4.8%, while the demand for poultry rose by 5.6% in the same period compared to 2016.

"Already last year, we noted that pork had become a driver for the meat consumption growth, in 2017 this trend remains at a high level," Mr. Kovalev said." In addition, the positive dynamics of the poultry consumption resumed, while last year this segment had an increase of only 0.6%."

According to the National Union of Swine Breeders, the estimated share of imported pork in consumption will be around 9% compared to that of 8% in 2016. Furthermore, the NSS said that by the end of 2017 Russia will produce 323 thousand tons of pork, up by 14% compared to the production reported last year.
