Meat consumption goes down in the EU market

Restrictions applied in the EU single market due to COVID issues have created a downturn spiral for meat producers in the area. meat Consumption has dropped significantly in states such as Spain, Germany, Italy and France. As an example, Spaniards have consumed 8.4% less meat in 2021 compared with the previous year. The biggest fall is in the sheepmeat sector, with a decrease that reaches 13%. On the other hand, processed meat shows a contraction of close to 6%.
France, for its part, has also registered decreases in all categories of meat, and the only positive data is found in the pig sector which, despite reducing its volume, has slightly increased its value. Germany and Italy also recorded declines similar to those experienced in Spain, although not for the same products.

The industry is optimistic about 2022, as hospitality will be able to push consumption back to pre-pandemic levels. The problem now lies in the loss of purchasing power of European consumers, who have seen inflation rates increase significantly in most of their countries.
