Meat and poultry production in Iran expected to reach 3.5 mil tonnes

Iran’s deputy agriculture minister, Morteza Rezaei, predicts that by 20 March 2021 (the end of the current Iranian calendar year) the country's meat and poultry output will reach 3.5 million tonnes, with red meat accounting for 880,000 tonnes and 2.7 million tonnes of chicken meat. "Currently the per capita consumption of red meat is 12.5 kilograms, chicken meat 31.25 kilograms, raw milk 124 kilograms and eggs 11.72 kilograms,” said Rezaei. Meanwhile, the head of Iran's Livestock Provision Council, Mansour Pourian, urged the government to support local producers of red meat by purchasing red meat at guaranteed prices. The system is already implemented in 15 provinces of the country and has proven its efficiency by increasing red meat production in Iran by 41% in the fourth month of the Iranian calendar year ((July 22-August 21), compared with the same period last year. Pourian announced that 4,000 tons of red meat have been purchased in this way by the State Livestock Affairs Logistics Company since early July.
Iran is among the leading consumers of red meat in the West Asia region with lamb being the most sought after. At the same time, imports of red meat are still made, mostly from Brazil.
