Lithuania threatens to ban pork imports from Poland

A trade war inside EU seems to take place between two countries inside the trade block. Poland and Lithuania are having a controversy regarding pork trade between them. Due to a ban imposed by Warsaw on Lithuanian pork, the authorities in the neighbouring country are threatening to close their border for Polish pork imports, according to Dziennik magazine.
"If the problem of banning imports of pork from Lithuania to Poland is not solved diplomatically, Lithuania will hinder imports of pork from Poland," declared the Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture Giedrius Surplys. Since mid-December, Poland has decided to suspend the import of pigs and pork from countries and regions affected by African Swine Fever.
The issue has been discussed by Polish Minister of Agriculture Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski with his Lithuanian counterpart Giedriusz Surplys but the case could be discussed inside the European Commission.
"It violates the principle of free trade in the EU. Pork is healthy and additionally checked. It is worth noting that our pork exports to Poland are ten times smaller than their exports to Lithuania. Perhaps in this way, we will be heard" claims the head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture, who threatens to ban imports of pork from Poland if the dispute is not settled diplomatically.
