Japan wants to double its game meat consumption

The data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries indicates that, in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of wild birds and animals that were captured for the purpose of protecting farm products.

In 2015, only 10% of all the wild deer and boars were consumed as meat, with 620,000 deer and 550,000 wild hogs caught that year.

The Japanese authorities hope that through this certification system they will double the consumption of game meat, or "gibier" as it is called in Japan, by 2019.

Based on the new certification system, Japan news reports that all the processing facilities will be able to put a logo on their products that will indicate that they meet the strict criteria, including hygiene management.
