Jakarta live bird trade reaches 1 million per day
High consumption of poultry in Indonesia raises a high risk of biosecurity as the live bird trade has gone up to 1 million per day solely in Jakarta.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the last 11 years, there have been 200 cases of Avian Influenza found in humans in Indonesia, which caused 168 deaths. The Greater Jakarta area recorded the highest number of the cases in Indonesia, which may be related to the high level of live poultry entering Jakarta, informs Tempo newspaper.
A health chicken programme supported by local authorities, UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been implemented in Jakarta in the last few years and it aims at restructuring the market chain by controlling the movement and trade of live poultry in the area.
"We do this to ensure Jakarta is free of avian influenza, and to provide safe and healthy poultry products for Jakarta residents", explained Anies Baswedan, Governor of Jakarta.
Stephen Rudgard, FAO Representative in Indonesia, explained that FAO has worked through the market restructuring program to help market actors and slaughterhouses to process poultry cleanly, to disinfect poultry transport vehicles, improve market cleanliness, and increase the awareness of poultry sellers and consumers. During the last 10 years, 10 locations of markets and other facilities in Jakarta have been assisted in a pilot project to implement biosecurity practice in the market and to be adopted by the local government to the market, according to local authorities.
