JBS brings forward zero deforestation targets

As recently announced in partnership with the Tropical Forest Alliance, JBS is leading Brazilian cattle sector efforts to drive the elimination of deforestation and the protection of native vegetation across all Brazilian biomes by 2030 in line with a 1.5°C Roadmap. This prioritizes illegal deforestation as the key driver of forest clearing.

The roadmap includes the following Time bound targets:

- Amazon: 2023 target date for no-deforestation for direct suppliers, and 2025 for indirect suppliers (legal and illegal, PRODES 2008)
- Cerrado: 2025 target date for no illegal deforestation (PRODES 2020) for direct and indirect suppliers
- All Brazilian Biomes: As of January 1, 2026, it will be mandatory for direct suppliers to join the JBS Livestock Transparency Platform and provide information on their indirect suppliers to enable application of JBS socioenvironmental criteria throughout the cattle supply chain.  Specific Target Zero Deforestation dates and criteria for other biomes will be set in line with development of the necessary monitoring systems.
- 2030: In line with the 1.5°C Roadmap, a collective global risk assessment will identify other areas of risk, and companies will develop additional implementation plans as needed

This work builds on JBS’ existing monitoring to ensure that producers are not operating in areas of illegal deforestation, on indigenous lands or in environmental conservation units; that they do not use forced labor and are not subject to environmental embargoes.

For more than a decade the Company has been using public information databases and a geospacial system with satellite imagery to monitor its 80,000-plus beef cattle suppliers on a daily basis. Monitoring covers an area of over 900,000 square kilometers, or 90,000 hectares, equivalent to the combined territories of France and Germany. Based on this system, 15,000 properties have already been suspended for non-compliance with the JBS Responsible Raw Material Procurement Policy, as well as the Cattle Supplier Monitoring Protocol of the Office of the Federal Prosecutor. To ensure compliance with the commitments assumed, in addition to the monitoring system, internal and external audit procedures have been implemented with an emphasis on continuous improvement of processes and systems with the aim of improving its social and environmental due diligence.

In order to extend this monitoring process to the suppliers of its suppliers, guaranteeing that they all abide by the same social and environmental criteria, a challenge facing the entire Brazilian farming sector, the JBS Transparent Livestock Platform came on stream in 2021. The tool makes innovative use of blockchain technology that allows its suppliers to evaluate their own respective suppliers of animals. In this way JBS has managed to advance in its monitoring procedure while at the same time respecting Brazilian legislation on data privacy. Commencing January 1, 2026, 100% of direct suppliers will be obligated to integrate with the platform in order to continue doing business with the Company.
