JBS and BRF plants approved for export to South Africa
Brazilian meat producers JBS and BRF are increasing their presence in the South African meat market. Each of the companies has two units enabled to export pork and chicken meat to the African country.
Last week, JBS announced that two plants of the subsidiary Seara were approved to export chicken meat to South Africa. With that, the company now has 28 units ready to export chickens and pigs for the African country. At the same time, BRF has received the green light for pork exports for two units specialized in poultry and pork reaching a total of 20 units enabled to export to South Africa.
The African country ranks as the 4th buyer of Brazilian poultry and the 14th largest in pig meat. According to data released by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), during the first quarter of this year, Brazil shipped 78,400 tonnes of chicken meat to South Africa, up 32% from the same period last year. In the case of pork exports, there is still a long market to be explored, since in the first quarter of 2021, Brazil shipped only 1,800 tonnes to South Africa.
