Italy may now export its pork products to Taiwan
European experts expect that the opening of this market will generate Italian pork product sales of nearly €2 million in the following period.
According to a statement released by the European Commission, Italy may now export its fresh meat to Taiwan effective immediately, but it will take a few months until the Italian ham shipments will reach the Taiwanese market as they have to complete their maturation process.
"This important breakthrough is further vindication of the high standards of EU food production. Europe is the best address for high-quality food in the world and we will build on this opening to the Taiwanese market to pursue further market opportunities in Asia," said Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Phil Hogan.
The European executive said it will continue to work closely with the Taiwanese authorities and other member states in order to expand bilateral trade for food products with Taiwan. The European officials consider that the recent breakthrough should send a signal to other Asian governments to "fully recognise the EU's stringent veterinary controls that fully comply with international standards and guarantee the safety of our exported meat products."
