Israel has the world's first cultured meat plant
The world’s first industrial cultured meat facility, owned by startup Future Meat Technologies, has opened in the city of Rehovot. The plant is located in the vicinity of the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Faculty of Agriculture and has a daily production of 500 kilos of free-slaughter meat (the equivalent of 5,000 burgers).
So far, the scientists have succeeded in creating chicken, pork and lamb in the lab, while beef is expected to be produced in the next few months. "This facility opening marks a huge step in Future Meat Technologies’ path to market, serving as a critical enabler to bring our products to shelves by 2022. Having a running industrial line accelerates key processes such as regulation and product development,” said Rom Kshuk, CEO of Future Meat Technologies, according to Jewish News Syndicate. Products are created without the use of animal serum or genetic modification, announced the company.
Also, Future Meat’s production process is expected to generate 80% fewer greenhouse emissions, and use 99% less land and 96% less freshwater than traditional meat production. Next year, the company plans to open the US market. Currently, Future Meat Technologies is engaged in the process of approving its production facility with regulatory agencies in multiple territories.
