Irish Lamb prices fall below 5 euros per kilogram, but trade remains stable

The Irish Food Board, Bord Bia, announced that the lamb trade remains relatively steady for the week ending August 4th, but the demand is still slow on key export markets and there are continuing strong supplies. Moreover, the prices for spring lamb were situated between �4.80/kg and �4.90/kg, as for the culled ewe, the prices were around �2.70/kg.

For the week ending July 29th, the exporting meat plants had throughputs of nearly 59,000 head "which was up 12% or 6,000 head on the corresponding week in 2016." From the start of 2017 cumulative figures have reached 1.57 million head, an increase of 10% or 143,000 head compared to the same similar period of 2016, according to Bord Bia.

Furthermore, the Irish Food Board noticed that in Britain the trade has eased somewhat caused by reduced throughputs and demand, the export trade being backed by the exchange rate fluctuations. "The SQQ live price for lamb in England and Wales was making the equivalent of around €4.88/kg dw during the week."
