Iran says "no need for red meat imports"

Proper climate conditions and a rise in livestock breeding have provided an opportunity for the country to fully meet its red meat demand this year.

Iranian officials say that the country doesn't need red imports for the rest of the Iranian year (March 2020) thanks to increased production. "As has been the case in the past, 10% of the country’s red meat demand has been met via imports while 90% is met domestically. However, proper climate conditions and a rise in livestock breeding have provided an opportunity for the country to fully meet its red meat demand this year," said Saeed Soltani, director-general of the Central Union of Animal Husbandry.

During the summer, red meat production in Iran was at 77,000 tonnes, according to the official data. The volume is 22% lower than the one reported in the summer of 2018.
