Interporc examines pork export prospects to the Japanese market

Under the agreement, Japan will cut its custom duties on pork products from the EU and Interporc believes this is a great opportunity for the Spanish pork producers.

Until now, tarrifs on processed pork products from Europe had a levy of up to 8.5% on the value of the product, while those on meat were 4.3%. The organisation said that thanks to the agreement the tarrifs set on pork products imported from the EU will be progressively eliminated which will allow the Spanish pork producers to increase their presence in the Japanese market.

Interpoc added that the agreement also protects a total of 205 food products with geographical indications, which will have a very positive effect on many agro-food SMEs.

The Spanish meat organisation said that Spain is the country that has grown its presence the most in the Japanese market. Spain has increased its white pork exports to Japan fivefold since 2017 - the shipments reached 100,000 tonnes with a value of 340 million euros.

Interporc will be present at Foodex Japon fair, which will be held from March 5 to 8, and will also develop an extensive program of activities throughout the year, such as increasing its presence in restaurants, retail, and foodservice and promoting its activities through the media with the aim of bringing the Spanish white pork products closer to Japanese importers, distributor and consumers.
