ISN: EU pork exports fell significantly in 2023
Last year, the EU member states again exported significantly fewer pigs, pork and by-products to third countries from January to December compared to the previous year. Exports recorded a total decline of 18%, reports AMI based on data from the EU Commission.
With a market share of 31%, Spain remains by far the largest European supplier, although the country saw a 19% decline in the volume of pork exported. Behind Spain in second and third place are the Netherlands and Denmark as important exporters, with Danish exports falling by 30% last year. German pork exports to third countries fell by 16% compared to 2022.
The main buyer for European pork is China, followed by the United Kingdom and Japan. Due to the declining development of pig populations in the EU, it is expected that exports to third countries will continue to decline.
