INTERPORC highlights biosafety as a key tool in reducing antibiotics

The opening was carried out by Cristina Marí, from the INTERPORC Sustainability department, who announced the good prospects that the members of the REDaPORC have in view of the progress that is being made on the way to obtaining a tool that makes it easier for pig farms and companies to take decision-making on antibiotic management. A result that will result in benefits in matters such as biosecurity, sustainability, animal welfare or food safety.

Araceli Orozco, coordinator of REDaPORC, introduced the speakers, beginning with María del Carmen González, deputy director of  Animal Health, Hygiene and Traceability of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), collaborating partner of REDaPORC.  In its intervention, she presented the applications that MAPA has contributed to the REDaPORC program to cross-reference the data that farmers voluntarily enter. "SITRAN offers data on farms and animal movement, while PRESVET shows information on the use of veterinary prescriptions."

Next, Jordi Baliellas, from GSP Lleida and the veterinarian responsible for the project, presented the results provided by the platform developed by REDaPORC after carrying out three biosafety surveys in the 350 participating farms over ten months. "The data obtained allows companies to identify the critical points in biosafety, in addition to showing summaries of  data that facilitates takin rapid measures."

Finally, Lorenzo Fraile, from the University of Lleida, confirmed that "based on these data it has been possible to carry out the first statistical approach on this matter. Information that will allow us to reach very useful conclusions".
