IAWS: Improving animal welfare and international trade

In recent years, the Spanish white pork sector has become an international leader in animal welfare thanks to a production model that strictly complies with European regulations on this matter, the most demanding in the world, and the strong awareness of Spanish farmers who go far beyond what is required, knowing that the best quality of life for animals translates into higher quality products for consumers and ultimately in higher competitiveness in the sector.

Besides the strict national and European Union regulations, the "Welfare Commitment Certified" certification seal is now added, created by INTERPORC and endorsed by a Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare, to certify the good practices carried out in the pork sector in terms of animal welfare and biosecurity and it is the most demanding of the European Union in these matters.

One of the most important factors included in the IAWS (INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain) Animal welfare and Biosecurity Technical Regulation are facilities which help the expression of the behaviour of each animal and satisfy their vital needs. By supporting the seal, our farmers have not only improved the farm facilities but the entire production model from Farm to Fork.

Another factor is animal health, which aims at the health and welfare of animals. By fulfilling this objective, two other factors that are intimately linked are guaranteed too: the economy and international trade. Partly, thanks to this it has been possible for products from the Spanish pork sector to reach more than 130 countries around the world today.

Through the "Welfare Commitment Certified" seal, the Spanish white pork sector anticipates the demands of consumers and retail to offer transparency and a guarantee of commitment to animal welfare throughout the entire life process of the animal, as well as helping the companies of the sector in the conquest of international markets.
