Hong Kong bans poultry meat and products from province in the Netherlands

The ban came in view of a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza in the province ofOverijssel.

A CFS spokesman said that Hong Kong imported about 4 900 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 1.8 million poultry eggs from the Netherlands last year.

"The CFS has contacted the Dutch authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.

On 13 March, the Hong Kong food safety authority also imposed restrictions on imports of poultry meat and eggs from areas in the United States, Mexico and France.

This announcement was also preceded by notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of low pathogenic H7N1 avian influenza in Hopkins County, Texas, in the United States (US), an outbreak of low pathogenic H5N3 avian influenza in Finistère Department in France, and outbreaks of highly pathogenic H7N3 avian influenza in Guanajuato State and Queretaro State of Mexico, informs Xinhua agency.
