Historical moment for the Colombian pork industry

25 tonnes of Colombian pork was shipped for the first time in a third country. After six months of negotiations, Colombia received the green light for pork exports to Angola. 70% of the meat to be exported is from animals from the Antioquia, Valle del Cauca and Meta regions, which are areas free of Classical Swine Fever (CSF).
Angola usually imports pork from Brazil, Portugal, Belgium and Argentina. "This is a historic moment for the Colombian pork industry which has had the dream of entering international markets. Today, we are making that dream a reality with the export of this first container to Angola, and thus beginning a new stage of pig production in Colombia," stated Jeffrey Fajardo Lopez, president of the Pork Colombia Association.
The association and the Colombian government are currently involved in negotiations to open several other markets such as China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Guatemala and Ecuador. For 2019, experts are expecting the production to reach 450,000 tonnes of pork, 10% higher compared to the volume recorded last year.
