Ghana's poultry sector is collapsing due to low egg consumption
Ghanian poultry producers don't have many reasons to smile nowadays. The sector is facing a crisis as the consumption of eggs is staying low and officials of the Ghana National Poultry Farmers' Association are asking support from the government for developing a national campaign to encourage people to consume eggs, informs My Joy Online magazine.
"For years, people have been misinformed that eggs contained cholesterol which is not good for human health, but cholesterol is biosynthesized in the body. Research has shown that cholesterol is not about what we eat" said Napoleon Agyemang Oduro, Vice President of the Ghana National Poultry Farmers' Association, during a workshop dedicated to the poultry industry.
According to him, the situation has led to slow growth of the poultry industry and other related businesses as the cost ways to package, brand and market eggs to enhance sales is too expensive for many of the producers. Agyemang Oduro called on the Ghana Health Service to embark on a national campaign on the nutritious values of eating eggs to boost production saying that an increase in consumption could lead to more jobs and sustain the entire value chain.
