Ghana looks to end poultry imports in 5 years

Over the next 5 years, Ghana wants to end poultry imports and to develop a strong local industry, informs Ghanaweb agency. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture intends to produce a total of 20 million day-old chicks in a program called "Broiler Revitalization Project". After that, the chicks to be produced would be distributed to selected poultry farmers nationwide.
The program will have 5 phases, with each phase covering a period of one year expected to record the production of 4 million chicks. Ghana's current production potential is estimated at 4.4 million birds but in the 3 years, the local producers were suffocated by frozen poultry imports from the EU member states.
Officials from the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA) say that poultry farmers across the country would take advantage of the project to expand their operations. At the same time, the president of GAPFA, Michael Ampem believes that the market should remain open to poultry imports to motivate the industry to develop and modernize. "Poultry importers should be made to buy at least 50% of poultry products produced in Ghana and import the rest of the 50%", he said.
