Germany reports 86 ASF cases in wild boar population

The number of ASF cases in Germany has jumped to 86, with 15 of those confirmed in just two days, last week. So far, the virus has been found only in the wild boar population, although in the areas contaminated are more than a dozen farms. China and many other pork buyers banned imports of German pork in September after the first case was confirmed, causing Chinese pork prices to surge and German prices to slump.
However, part of the 300,000 tonnes that were supposed to be shipped to China by the end of the year is expected to be delivered in the single market, where countries such as Romania, Bulgaria or Poland are also confronted with ASF cases in both wild animals and industrial pig farms. This has helped keep German pig prices stable in recent weeks despite the loss of the country’s pork exports to Asia. In the German market, the average pig prices have lost only 14% but continuous demand from China has increased pig prices in Brazil, Canada and the US. Germany had a 14% share in the Chinese pork market and the gap is expected to be filled by Brazil, the US, Spain, Canada and the Netherlands.
