Germany is exploring the halal food global market
UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, Libya, Lebanon, Azerbaijan or Malaysia are the markets that absorbed in the last couple of years German food products that are compliant with halal requirements. Halal beef, sheep and poultry in forms of meat and edible meat offal have been exported in 2016 in Turkey ($3.89 million), UAE ($4.23 million) and Malaysia ($19.86 million).
Products of meat, fish& seafood certified according to Islamic law have found ways to enter on Azerbaijan’s market ($954,000), Lebanon ($1.73 million) and UAE ($2.16 million). The figures may not sound like much but, in fact, the fish consumption in the Arab world, represented here by UAE, is at 2% from total food demand.
Also, Lebanon has its own sources in fisheries whilst Azerbaijan has its own quotas of capture from the Caspian Sea and remains a market open to products from the Russian Federation and other states in the region. Eggs and dairy products along with natural honey and other edible products of animal origin are
turning to be a real success with exports in top 3 Muslim markets worth almost $200 million in 2016, as reported by ITC Trade Map. Libya has bought products worth $45.64 million, close to UAE’s imports of $47.95 million while Saudi Arabia imports of “Made in Germany” products from this range reached to $105.49 million. Also, soups and broths, sauces and spices exports are increasing in volume and value as Germany is gaining field in big markets like Iran ($42.39 million), Turkey ($80.61 million) or Saudi Arabia ($82.03 million). According to data from Halal Expo Stuttgart, Germany has more than 400 halal-related companies
in the country. In 2016, the German food&beverage industry it was estimated at $183 billion (168.6 billion euros) but no one can tell accurately the dimension of the halal market in F&B sector, despite the fact that more than 5 million Muslims are living in this country. The main organisations for halal certification in Germany are The European Institute of Halal Certification (EHZ) established in 2000 and the Islamic Centre Aachen, founded in 1974.
