Germany: Industry solution for CO 2 calculation in pig farming
The aim is to agree on a uniform calculation of individual farm CO2 emissions as a basis for optimizing CO2 emissions. In addition, the provision of the values for the CSRD reporting obligations of the downstream stages should be made possible. Ultimately, this will enable the industry to provide information on CO2 emissions in pig farming.
The QS testing system was commissioned to coordinate and implement the development of the industry solution. The basis is planned to be a calculation method that is currently being developed by the Chambers of Agriculture of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, the LfL Bavaria, the Thünen Institute and KTBL. The industry aims to ensure that pig farms can enter their data for CO2 calculations in a platform provided by QS from the first quarter of 2025.
Due to regulatory requirements, the agriculture and meat industry is faced with having to report on its climate performance. One component is CO2 emissions on farms. A uniform approach across the industry offers the advantage that the data input by the farms and the subsequent calculation only has to be done once, instead of many different approaches becoming established in the market. It is planned that the operational data required for the calculation can also be transferred via interfaces from farm management systems.
A clearly defined role and rights system is provided so that animal owners can decide for themselves which data from the platform may be passed on to which third parties.
"With a harmonized solution, the results of which can be mapped via the QS database, we avoid duplication of work and a confusing landscape of many different systems and procedures. In this way, we want to reduce efficiency losses and costs for the entire chain", explains QS Managing Director Dr. Alexander Hinrichs about the planned approach. QS has gained a lot of experience in the collection and management of data in recent years, from which this project can benefit.
