Germany: Healthy pigs cannot find theyr way onto the food shelves

Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast explained: “We have achieved our goal and found sufficient cooling capacity in Lower Saxony for the slaughtered goods. All overweight animals can find space there. Negotiations between the contracting parties are ongoing.” The minister demanded: “With a few exceptions, the meat industry has so far been absolutely inadequate because processing and marketing are not keeping up. There are obviously omissions on the part of those responsible as to how the chain can be maintained in the event of an ASF outbreak. The reasons are manifold, partly understandable when it comes to the market situation. It is completely incomprehensible to me that healthy animals cannot find their way onto the food shelves here when there is a need in the world.”

The Ministry of Agriculture therefore wanted to open up a way by renting cold stores to get the pigs out of the stables. Then the high-quality meat could be processed in the medium and long term. "The desperation of the farming families is great because they have relied on the market partners," said Otte-Kinast. She urged the meat industry to do their "homework" as soon as possible. Apparently, processing and marketing is possible despite the difficult market environment. The few slaughterhouses that continue to slaughter animals from the exclusion zone would prove this.
