Germany: ASF detected in domestic pigs in the urban area of Cottbus

It is a small farm with 11 animals. The stock was immediately blocked by the responsible veterinary office of the Spree-Neisse district/city of Cottbus and the necessary measures were initiated. The virus was first detected by the Berlin-Brandenburg state laboratory. The national reference laboratory, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), confirmed the suspicion of ASF.

Investigations into the cause of the entry of the pathogen into the pig population have begun. The veterinary office is supported by the country's animal disease control service. The crisis center of the state of Brandenburg is in constant contact with the veterinary office. The portfolio is located in core area 6, which is located in the south of the district in the immediate vicinity of the Saxon border. The pigs in the herd were killed and disposed of harmlessly.

In July 2021, ASF was detected in domestic pig populations for the first time in the state of Brandenburg. There were three stocks (including two very small holdings) in the rural districts of Spree-Neisse and Märkisch-Oderland. In July 2022 there was another ASF outbreak in a pig farm in the Uckermark district.

Secretary of State for Consumer Protection Dr. Antje Töpfer once again appeals to all pig farms and in particular to all small farms to strictly comply with the prescribed biosecurity measures in order to prevent further outbreaks in domestic pigs.
So far, African swine fever has been found in a total of 3,007 wild boars in Brandenburg.
