German poultry imports banned in the Philippines
The Philippines placed a temporary ban on poultry and poultry products from Germany due to the bird flu outbreak reported by the European country earlier this week. The import ban on Germany covers the domestic and wild birds, and their products, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen.
Earlier, Manila ordered the slapping of the ban on poultry products from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and China, countries that reported bird flu outbreaks in the last couple of months.
Last month, Filipino officials renewed the country's system accreditation for poultry meat imports from Germany asking that the source of meat shall be from animals born and raised in Germany and must not contain residues of antibiotics, pesticides, hormones, heavy metals, radioactivity and similar substances that may pose public health and environmental hazards.
On February 10, Germany confirmed a bird flu outbreak on a family farm in Bretzfeld, Hohenlohekreis, Baden-Wurrtemberg, with 69 birds affected by the H5N8 virus.
