GB pig prices continue to fall
Annie Linekar, a AHDB Trainee Analyst, says that estimated slaughterings in the week ended 30 December were situated at 101.9 thousand head, which was 44% lower than the previous week. The AHDB analyst explained that the loss of slaughter days due to bank holidays in the week between Christmas and New Year.
Furthermore, according to Annie Linekar, slaughterings were also 11% lower than the same week last year, though had been above year earlier levels in the previous week. In fact, in the two-week period ended 30 December, estimated slaughterings were actually 4% above 2016 levels.
Contrary to the declining trend witnessed in recent weeks, in week ended 30 December carcase weights rose a substantial 2.07kg on the week to 84.12kg, increasing the difference on year earlier levels to 830g.
In week ended 23 December, the EU-spec APP fell 0.49p/kg compared to the previous week, to stand at 153.76p/kg. The price is now 0.89p lower than the equivalent week a year earlier. In the same week, the gap between the APP and SPP widened on the previous week to 3.36p, reflecting a larger drop in the SPP this week.
