French pork exports to China increases sharply
French pork exports have increased by 3% in the first three months of the year, reaching to 169,200 tonnes (€318.1 million). Increase demand from China has supported these figures as the Asian country registered a growth of 23% in pork imports from France due to the African Swine Fever situation. At this point, China accounts for 20% of all Frech pork exports up by 4% from the same period last year.
At the same time, Italy has reduced the need for pork imports from France by 11% to 26,500 tonnes, according to AHDB data.
At the same time, French pig meat imports (including offal), on the other hand, fell 5% year-on-year in the first quarter, to 123,900 tonnes, worth €374.0 million.
The volume of imports is down by 5% compared to Q1 2018 with Spain(-9%) and Germany (-6%) as the big losers among the suppliers. The situation seems a little bit awkward as the charcuterie industry in France is complaining about a pork crisis resulted from increased exports to China and higher prices for pig meat and ingredients.
