France is taking a step to organic farming of pigs
The third EU producer of pork, France, has seen a decline by 5% in pork exports in 2017, due to a decrease in the number of sows in the last decade and a half.
At this time, France has 960,000 sows, down from 1,250,000 back in 2000 and the total production of pigs is about 13 million head officially registered in 2016.
"The French pig industry is dominated by smaller family farms. Farrow-to-finish farms represent 82% of all sows, with an average of 200 sows per farm. 73% of the pigs are produced in North West of France, Brittany area", stated Philippe Malletroit, Director France, Genesus Inc in his report about the pig industry in France.
One new trend is mentioned in the report as organic farming is growing among the local producers of pigs. "Organic farming starts to grow slowly in France, with a target of about 1 million organic finisher pigs produced on the upcoming years", said Malletroit in his report.
Italy and China are the main markets of France's pork exports in 2017, with China maintaining a market share of 11,5% while Italy registered an increase of 28% in exports in that period.
