Filipino poultry production grows, pork is down

Poultry production in the Philippines was up by 5.8% last year, with chicken output increasing by 4.9%. Except for duck, all poultry components reported positive gains last year, both as a continuation of a longer growth trend and a result of consumers looking for non-pork sources of protein.
Nevertheless, pig production was low due to massive culling initiated after the ASF outbreak in late August. In fact, hog production declined by 9.8% in the last quarter of 2019, impacting the livestock sector result (-8.5%). For the entire year, the decline in livestock and pig production was about 1%, according to data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Last week, the country confirmed new cases of ASF, rising the number of culled pigs to almost 200,000.
In a follow-up report to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Department of Agriculture (DA) said 130 new outbreaks and 2,891 cases have been recorded since August last year. Losses estimated so far by the industry are close to $80 million.
