FSIS revealed the name of the producer responsible for salmonella illnesses
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that Triple T Specialty Meats, Inc. has been ordered to recall approximately 20,630 pounds (9357 kg) of ready-to-eat chicken salad products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Typhimurium.
The ready-to-eat items were produced between Jan. 2, 2018 and Feb. 7, 2018, and shipped to Fareway grocery stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. FSIS was notified by the health officials in Iowa about the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak on February 9. The Iowa Department of Public Health determined that there is a link between the chicken salad from Triple T Specialty Meats, Inc. and the 37 cases reported in the state.
FSIS continues to work with state and federal health officials to determine if there are additional illnesses linked to this product, including illnesses in states outside of Iowa. This product was sold at Fareway grocery stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. FSIS will provide updated information as it becomes available.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their healthcare provider.
FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
