Ecuador is increasing the pork consumption
Ecuador has increased its per capita pork consumption from 6.88 kg in 2009 to 10.90 kg in present. At the same time, the domestic production has grown by almost 100%, reports Pig333 website.
The pig sector in Ecuador has started its process of industrialisation back in 2005 and, by now it has paid results thanks to the improvement of genetics, feeding and health matters. "This effort has driven the market demand and has caused small, medium and large companies to increase their production levels. If we take a look at the figures in 2009, production has almost doubled, going from 90,000 to 173,194 tonnes, according to what is foreseen in 2018', mentioned José Orellana, executive manager of the Pig Producers' Association of Ecuador (Asociación de Porcicultores del Ecuador, ASPE).
At this moment, the home production can cover the domestic demand but the industry still needs to import different cuts and products, such as hide and fat, in order to keep up the production.
