EU pours 15 million euros in Uganda's beef industry

The development of a competitive and improved beef production in Uganda is supported by the EU which recently earmarked €15 million to create the conditions necessary for this project.
The funds will be channelled through Uganda's Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries for financing a five-year project whose objective is to create a conducive environment for competitive and improved beef production in the country, reports East African Business Week magazine.
"In this project, the public and private sector will work together to promote an environmentally – sustainable – resilient, low emission climate while promoting gender balance in the beef sector. We hope that if the project is fully implemented, it will increase farmers earning thus improving their standards of living", explained Dr Noelina Nantima, Assistant Commissioner Animal Diseases Control at the Ministry of Agriculture.
In his opinion, the project will enhance beef consumption within the country and as well boost beef export. The funds will help the existing abattoirs in 24 districts in the cattle corridor to modernize and it also will be used to build new slaughterhouses. A key factor for the development of beef industry in Uganda seems to be the improvement on the level of hygiene in the abattoirs.
