EU pig meat consumption increased overall in 2017

AHDB analyst Bethan Wilkins says the fresh pork markets from Spain and Italy both recorded a growth in value last year. In Spain, sales volumes were mostly stable and the increase in value was based on a 3% rise in average retail prices. In Italy, the growth in market value was influenced by both higher prices and greater sales volumes. Wilkins says "improved economic conditions may have helped boost sales, with Italy now recording four consecutive years of disposable income growth."

Meanwhile, sales of fresh pork decreased both in volume and value in Germany and France. In Germany, as explained by Wilkins, the sales volume was particularly large, at 6% year-on-year.The AHDB analyst says that the decline may be explained due to an increasing popularity amongst the German consumers for beef. Beef reported an increase in sales volumes by 10% in 2017 compared to the previous year. Still, "in contrast to pork, beef prices were slightly lower in 2017, and the improvement in the relative price competitiveness of beef may have aided sales," concluded Wilkins.

"In contrast to fresh pork, processed/charcuterie products recorded value growth in Northern Europe as well as Spain. Higher average retail prices supported the increase in market value across the member states, however, Germany and Spain also recorded higher sales volumes. The fact sales volumes have been increasing, despite rising prices, suggest demand for processed products has been good," Wilkins added.
