EU live pig prices are increasing for another week
The prices of fattening pigs are growing at different rates in the EU countries. Last week, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria recorded very high increases of €0.25/ kg in slaughter weight. Smaller price increases occurred in Germany (€0.10) Spain (€0.08), France (€0.06), Denmark (€0.05).
"The supply of live pigs on the EU market is insufficient. Meat plants are not able to use their full processing capacity. In many countries, processors complain that they cannot transfer the higher purchase prices of raw material to retail chains. Everything indicates that such a market layout will be dominant not only before Easter but also later this year," Polish pig producers commented in a press release from PolPig.
In Poland, live pig prices have also increased reaching €1.81/kg, close to those reported in the German market (€1.85). "In the perspective of the coming weeks, prices in Poland should increase due to the lower supply of livestock, the upcoming holiday season and the announced private storage program in the European Union countries.
The problem that has now become a priority in the EU is not to store EU pork for several months, but to provide sufficient feed for the animals kept. In addition, pig producers need a financial injection to be able to cope with the rising costs of production and the logistic challenges that emerged after the unleashed war in Ukraine. In our opinion, private storage will not solve these problems," PolPig representatives commented.
