Dutch beef production takes the first dive in 4 years
The Dutch national cattle inventory has declined constantly in the last three years due to exceeding EU pasture phosphate limits. Last year, beef cattle numbers declined by 8.4% to 3,690,000 head. The contraction of beef cattle herd has generated an increased production by 4.6% in 2018 and of 1.4% in exports.
Nevertheless, this year beef production in the Netherlands is expected to decline by 1.2% to 454,000 tonnes, according to an AHDB analysis. "Total beef and veal production for the first quarter of 2019 was down 5.7% on the same period last year. Since 2015, herd numbers declined by more than 625 thousand head. Dairy cow numbers also fell, a drop of 6.8% over the year saw the Netherlands experience the highest percentage declines of all EU member countries for its livestock herd last year", said Alex Cook, analyst, AHDB.
Beef exports in the first three months of the year were also down by 3% compared with Q1 2018.
