Denmark is expanding pork exports to third countries
According to current data from the association of the Danish agricultural and food industry, a total of 780,580 t of pork including live animals and by-products from Denmark were sold outside the EU borders in the first three quarters of 2021. That was around 63,600 t or 8.9% more than in the same period of the previous year. Exports within the EU increased less strongly by 2.5% to 738,080 t. If you factor out the not insignificant live trade in pigs, 428,680 tons of pork including by-products remained. The amount of meat exported to all 27 EU member states thus roughly corresponded to the volume of trade with China.
Deliveries to China increased by 3.2% to 428,150 t compared to the first three quarters of 2020. Recently, however, there was a significant decrease in the quantities shipped there, so that the previous year's result is unlikely to be achieved in 2021. However, there was strong demand in other third countries. Exports to the USA and Australia rose by around 30% each, those to South Korea by 70% and sales to the Philippines by a good 160%. Only in the new third country Great Britain did the sales volume decrease by almost 15% to 110,600 t. Not only did the sale of live pigs stall here, but also that of cuts, sausages and canned meat. Only the export of bacon increased significantly, by 48% to 39,500 t.
Within the EU, Germany remained the most important customer for Danish exporters, but trade fell for the third year in a row. The export volume in question fell by almost 30,000 t or 9.1% to 297,100 t from January to September 2020. This was due to the fact that, in addition to fewer parts delivered, the export of piglets and fattening pigs to Germany fell by almost 10% to 138,570. In contrast, sales of Danish canned meat and pork halves increased in this country. Poland remained the second most important EU destination for Denmark, with exports increasing by 3.0% to 210,460 t. The increase was much stronger with 35.4% to 104,440 t in Italy. This was primarily due to the increase in sales of parts of the pig by almost half to 88,340 t.
