Danish government to make life easier for small food producers

Denmark intends to modify the inspection rules for small food producers considering that there are too many check-ups right now. A small food business that keeps both chickens and sheep, produces feed, grows fruit and has a small shop or cafe, today receives many inspection visits because the checks are carried out by different inspectors, each specialized in a specific area. The changes are expected to take place in 2020, according to the Ministry of Food. " We will not compromise on neither food security nor animal welfare. But it should be easier to run a smaller food business. In this way, we are paving the way for exciting local ideas that hopefully can flourish and create food joy, experiences and workplaces throughout Denmark,", stated Minister Mogens Jensen.
The Food Authority must, therefore, coordinate to a greater extent the control and guidance of the small-scale businesses. Then the owner has the opportunity at the same inspection visit to have his farm shop checked and animal welfare guidance. The initiative is part of a larger small-scale package that will make life easier for small food producers. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will also look at the possibilities of changing the quantity limits for the sale of chickens and rabbits at barn door sales. Companies should be more able to choose whether they want longer visits focusing on more topics, or continue to have shorter and more specific visits. A significant part of the control visits will continue to be guidance on different food regulations.
The National Board of Food will also hold information meetings several times a year for new food companies. Also, a neighbor check should be done in other countries in specific areas where barriers to innovative and sustainable food production can be experienced in Denmark.
