The consumption of meat and pork products in the Spanish market has grown in 2023 to reach 1.01 million tons, which represents an increase of 1.5% compared to the same period of the year above, according to reports prepared by the Interprofessional INTERPORC based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and the National Institute of Statistics.

Consumption of meat and pork products grows by 1.5 percent in Spain

Household consumption rose from 795,700 tons in 2022 to 807,600, driven by the 4.4% increase in the consumption of meat and fresh and frozen products (from 402,500 tons to 420,200). On the opposite side, processed pork products decreased in households by 1.48% (from 393,200 tons to 387,400).

For its part, extra-domestic consumption grew by 1.51%, going from 189,900 tons to 201,900.

The data is especially significant since it puts an end to the slight decrease in consumption that has been experienced since 2020. In fact, the data for 2023, mainly those for meat and fresh and frozen products, are practically at 2019 figures (446,200 tons).

Alberto Herranz, general director of the Interprofessional, highlights that "the data shows that the white pork sector is responding to consumer demands and makes available the quality products they demand."

In this sense, remember that "every day healthier pork products arrive on the market, with less fat, reduced salt, etc.".

This, together with actions such as the sector's commitment to clean energy; the treatment and use of slurry; or the B+ Animal Welfare Commitment seal, whose technical regulations are the most demanding in the world, "describes a sector that is aware of market trends and tries to provide an early response to them", says the director of the Interprofessional.
