China's pork production increases in Q3

China's pork production rose by 18.2% in the third quarter of the year, to reach 8.4 million tonnes, according to official data quoted by Reuters. Along with that, Chinese officials have mentioned that the breeding herd has reached 38 million heads (+28%), a figure that is close to pre-ASF levels. These are the first signs of recovery in the Chinese pig herd since the beginning of the ASF crisis in August 2018. Meat production in China was expected to hit the lowest level in 16 years, according to Rabobank analysts, who predicted a 20% contraction for 2020. Nevertheless, production in the first nine months of 2020 fell just 10.8% from the previous year to 28.38 million tonnes, according to the latest report from the National Statistics Office.
The number of slaughtered pigs fell 11.7% in the first nine months, to 361.86 million, the data also show. Beef and sheep production also declined in the nine months, 1.7% and 1.8%, respectively, according to official data, although poultry, the cheapest substitute for pig meat, grew 6.5% in the period.
