China turns to Artificial Intelligence to track its pigs

The AI project called 'ET Brain', developed by Alibaba is aimed at solving the problem of tracking pigs and record the animals' health, behavior and whereabouts in the modern pig farms from China.

“If you have 10 million pigs to raise, you can barely count how many piglets were born on a daily basis when the due date comes,” Tequ Group's chief information officer Zhang Haifeng said in a statement, according to Digital Journal.

Currently, the main methods of tracking pigs in China include Radio-frequency identification (RFID) electronic tagging systems. This system is usually attached to a pig's ear, enabling it to record all the data regarding the animal and storing it in a central database.

However, this method proved to be very costly and time-consuming for the domestic producers.

Alibaba has started a trial of its 'ET Brain' technology on a farm in Sichuan province, which promises to reduce labor and equipment costs for this local producer.

China has modernized its pork industry and rose its production from the 1980s. The country has now nearly 700 million pigs and is turning towards new technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), in order to maintain its huge production and quality and safety standards.
