China sets new record in pork imports

In April, China's pork imports have reached 400,000 tonnes driving the total volume imported in the first four months of the year at 1.35 million tonnes. That represents a spike of 170% compared with the same period last year, according to Reuters. Lower prices in several markets such as the US, Canada, Brazil have encouraged the buyers to stock up on meat.
Due to the ASF situation in the country, domestic production has dropped by 40% in the last year and a half and imports have increased since March last year to levels never seen before.
An ABPA estimate released at the beginning of the year stated that China's pork imports for 2020 may reach 4 million tonnes. Prices in China for live pigs are at $4.20/ kg liveweight, the highest in the world. The country is followed by Vietnam, with a price of $3.70/kg, according to Genesus Inc.
